Spring Ice is an Arctic furniture from Lapland, Finland. It is a high-quality product made of natural materials and visually beautiful furniture for different types of spaces and usages. Spring Ice can be used as a seat, desk or storage. By combining modules together, sets of curves or circular entities can be formed.
The product was designed and made for Habitare 2012 - Interior, design and furniture fair that was held in Helsinki, Finland. The idea to the product came from Sámi culture where the perception of the space is round. Other design themes for the product were: arcticity, locality and sustainable design.
The main material of the product is Birch. Name to the product came from the patterns that are in the front and at the back of the product. Light inside brings out the pattern. The stainless steel plates together with the acrylic form a holding structure for the top cover in addition to the wooden side plates.
The project was part of my master degree studies in the University of Lapland. I was responsible for delivering and finalizing all furniture prototypes in the project for Habitare in co-operation with Vocational College of Lapland. I was also responsible of co-operation with our partner university, Sámi Allaskuvla, Sámi University of Applied Sciences, which is located in Kautokeino, Norway.
